Congratulations to Leslie Mayfield, our latest Success Story!
Leslie was hired as a Legal Assistant for a law firm in Columbus, Ohio. Leslie's job duties include the following: Preparing petitions for family sponsored immigration, assisting attorneys with asylum cases and general office management.
Leslie, what was your employment situation prior to finding your new job? I was unemployed.
Which skills from your prior positions helped you apply for and obtain your new position? Organizational and Computer.
How did you find out about your new position; and how long had you been looking for a position? This opportunity came about as a result of an unsolicited letter that I sent to a number of Immigration attorneys in my area. I was searching for four months.
Are there any specific job search strategies you would like to recommend to others? Sending out an unsolicited letter, along with my resume, which clearly described my qualifications in the field of Immigration Law is what worked for me. When my new employer's assistant decided to leave, he pulled out my letter (thank goodness he saved it!) and gave me a call.
Leslie, could you describe how your AIPS schooling impacted your ability to find this new position? I have no legal background, so without the education I received through AIPS, I wouldn't have stood a chance.
Leslie, do you have any other words of wisdom for us? Stay true to your strengths, talents and passions. When your background, experiences and education share a common thread, this sets you apart as someone whose heart is in what you're doing. The letter that I wrote and sent out connected all the dots from my past in order to demonstrate that I'm not just looking for any old job. I'm looking to do something my life experiences have prepared me to do.
What an amazing story, Leslie!! Thank you for allowing us to share it. Good luck to you!!
